NAFCU Caucus Reveals Optimism And Some Bitterness

As the economy begins to show signs of life, credit unions converged on Washington to urge lawmakers not to add regulations that would make it harder for credit unions to serve their members.

Attendees were cautiously optimistic about the future and some said conditions weren’t as bad as they could have been. “We will be fine. I’ve been through this before, and I know it’s hard, but things are looking up,” said Bob Marquette, president/CEO of Members 1st Federal Credit Union and a NAFCU Board member. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), left, noted that he was a member of two credit unions and praised their efforts in helping working people. But he added that Congress needs to conduct a “thorough investigation to determine who the people are who caused the crisis, and if they committed crimes, hopefully, the courts will see to it that they experience the workings of the American prison system.” See our on-site coverage, pages 8-9.
