Ent Federal Credit Union, Colorado Springs, Colo., awarded its 2009 Youth Endowment Series grants to 17 local nonprofit organizations. The Youth Endowment Series program was established in 2000 and provides grants to organizations that benefit young people. Since its start, the program has provided $370,000 in grants to local organizations. This year, 44 local organizations applied for the grants. Applications were evaluated by a panel of volunteer employees on the organizations general benefit to the community, potential ability to use the Ent grant to obtain additional funds and degree of current community support. Holy Rosary Credit Union, Rochester, N.H., raised money for the Cocheco Valley Humane Society by selling its old computers to staff, family and friends. The credit union’s IT department decided to upgrade employee computers and sell the old ones to benefit the local animal shelter. The credit union raised $525 through the sale. First Community Credit Union of Beloit, Beloit, Wis., made a $2,000 donation to the Monroe Emergency Response Interagency Training Center. The funds were raised by firefighters referring community members to the credit union. For each mortgage that was originated up to a $200 donation was made to the MERIT Center.
Ohio Credit Union League, Columbus, Ohio, announced that its Credit Union for Kids Committee raised $80,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network as the result of a fundraising march. The annual event, Marching Miles for Miracle Kids march-a-thon, distributes the money raised to Ohio Children’s Hospitals. Since the event was started three years ago, Ohio credit unions have raised more than $260,000. The march is a 190-mile relay-style march. On average, marchers traveled 10 miles during the 19-day event. HarborOne Credit Union, Brockton, Mass., made a $1,000 donation to Trinity Catholic Academy in Brockton to help further its educational efforts. The Trinity Catholic Academy was formed in 2007 from the consolidation of three parish schools. The academy has a revamped curriculum with a new cafeteria, computer lab, art room and science lab.
