Consumer prices increased 0.4% last month, the Labor Department reported today.

Prices have increased during three of the last four months, though in July they were unchanged. In the last year consumer prices fell 1.5%.

Excluding food and energy costs, the CPI increased 0.1% in August, the same as in July. That index increased 1.4% in the past year.

Energy prices rose 4.6% in August, up from July's 0.4% decline. Those prices have fallen 23% in the past year.

Food prices increased 0.1% in August, following July's 0.3% decline. They have increased 0.4% in the last year.

Housing prices increased 0.1%, following July's decline of 0.2%. Those prices increased 0.9% in the past year.

Prices for medical care services increased 0.2%, following a 0.3% rise in May. Those prices have increased 3.2% in the last year.
