BOSTON -The CEO of a credit union that successfully sued the IRS, one of the early chief advocates of credit unions and one of the senators who shepherded the Federal Credit Union Act through Congress were celebrated as revolutionaries yesterday at the start of CUNA's America's Credit Union Conference & Expo.

CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica presented Cathie Tierney, president/CEO of Community First Credit Union, with an award for suing the IRS over the levying of the Unrelated Business Income Tax on the sale of certain financial products. A jury recently ruled in favor of the Appleton, Wisconsin-based credit union, though the government has appealed.

Tierney said that "being a credit union advocate is a gift of God."
