Merely 15 months after seeing their governor leave office in a prostitution scandal, Democrats in New York State suffered another blow yesterday when a legislative coup cost them control of the state Senate.

After two Democratic lawmakers voted with Republicans on a parliamentary maneuver, the Democrats effectively lost their control of the state Legislature's upper chamber. The GOP had controlled the Senate for 40 years until January.

According to the media reports, the Senators-Pedro Espada and Hiram Monserrate-had apparently been plotting with the Republicans for several weeks.
