South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union reached out to 3,000 students and potential members during this past month as part of its financial literacy month initiative.
The credit union held workshops for students at nine at-risk schools in the Miami-Dade County Public School District. The workshops were part of the credit unions "Got Green?" financial literacy program.
The students were taught the importance of savings, credit management and remaining debt free. Each student that participated in the workshops was issued a South Florida Educational savings account to practice what they had learned.
South Florida Educational also held workshops for the parents of students that participated to teach them how credit cards impact them and their children.
In addition to the workshops, the credit union is entering any student between the ages of 13 and 21 who opens a new savings account during the month of April into a drawing for an iPod shuffle and other prizes.
The Got Green? program won the Florida Department of Education's Commissioner's business recognition award, and the credit union was named district-wide exemplary Dade partner by Miami-Dade County Public School's for its contributions to the Miami-Dade educational system.
"Most college students haven't received adequate financial literacy education. We created Got Green? to meet this need for unbiased personal finance education," said Steve Webb, vice president of communications and public relations.
South Florida Educational serves educators, students and families of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The Got Green? program was started in 2007 and has reached more than 6,900 students.
