SANFORD, Fla. — Eight members of Seminole Schools Federal Credit Union fell victim to what is believed to have been a skimmer scam.
Skimming is a popular method among criminals that involves obtaining credit card information and using that information to create a new card to use and make fraudulent purchases. Criminals install skimming devices where consumers can't see them and steal their information as they make purchases.
All eight members had their credit cards cloned and their accounts cleaned out. Sanford police are investigating case but have not been able to locate the common purchase point where all eight victims had their information stolen.
Seminole Schools announced that every dime will be returned to members, and said it suspects an organized skimming operation is at work. The credit union posted an announcement on its Web site, www.seminolefcu.com, that all member accounts are fully insured and protected and asked members to update telephone numbers and addresses.
