WASHINGTON — In his first presidential appointment, President-elect Barack Obama has named U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, a politically savvy, though sometimes abrasive political veteran to be White House chief of staff.

Emanuel (D-Ill)., was the chief architect of the Democratic takeover of the House two years ago and was a top aide to former President Clinton in his campaign and in the White House.

CUNA's political action committee gave Emanuel $6,000 for his reelection campaign this cycle while NAFCU's committee gave him $2,000. On Tuesday, he won his fourth term representing a district on North Side of Chicago with 73.9% of the vote.

His occasionally sharp outbursts are a marked contrast to Obama's more reserved demeanor.

The best known story of Emanuel's temper is that he once sent a rotting fish to a pollster who angered him.
