WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Stevens was convicted today of seven counts of lying about $250,000 worth of gifts he received from a businessman to whom he helped clear federal contracts and others.

Stevens, R-Alaska, faces up to five years in prison on each count. He was chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee for years when the GOP controlled the Senate. He has been in the Senate since 1968.

He is seeking re-election next week and is being challenged by Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. CUNA's political action committee, CULAC, gave Stevens' campaign $4,000.
