WASHINGTON — Sales of new homes increased 2.7% in September but were 33.1% less than the levels in September 2007, the Commerce Department reported today.
There were 464,000 new homes sold, compared with 452,000 in August and 694,000 in September 2007.
It was the second consecutive piece of mixed housing data. On Friday, the National Association of Realtors reported that existing home grew by 5.5% in September, but were only 1.1% higher than in September 2007.

In September new home sales increased in the West and South by 22.7% and 0.7%, respectively. They fell in the Northeast and Midwest by 21.4% and 5.8%, respectively.
The year-to-year sales figures declined in all four regions, ranging from 23.8% to 65.1% in the West.
September's median price for a new home was $218,400, compared with $221,900 in August.
