ST. PAUL, Minn. — In the case of the second time being the charm, Sen. John McCain is scheduled to accept the GOP nomination for president tonight, the closing session of this year's Republican National Convention.
McCain, a member of Navy Federal Credit Union, is scheduled to speech at around 10:00 EDT. and the stage was rebuilt overnight to accommodate his desire to speak in a less formal town hall format that plays to his strengths as a campaigner. He sought the GOP nomination in 2000 but lost to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush.
The four-term senator from Arizona accepts the nomination at a time when the GOP is behind in most polls in part because of the nation's economic difficulties. McCain has said he wants to stimulate the growth of the economy through additional tax cuts.
Lobbyists for CUNA and NAFCU have said that while neither McCain nor Democratic nominee Barack Obama have been especially active on credit union legislation, both enjoy good relations with credit unions in their respective states.
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, senior policy adviser to McCain and Gary Gensler, senior economic adviser to Obama, will debate their candidates' positions on these issues at a luncheon session during NAFCU's upcoming Congressional Caucus.
