AUSTIN, Texas — The Credit Union Information Security Professionals Association is enhancing its alerts services and announcing a collaboration with the Association of Corporate Credit Unions.

The CUISPA's communications forums have been upgraded to enhance the peer-to-peer alert system used to notify credit union IT departments and risk officers of online and other threats.

"This is a cooperative program," said Kelly Dowell, CUISPA executive director. "If you are experiencing any suspicious activity, we ask that you immediately notify us. We will contact you, help assess it, determine what alert should be sent out and post an alert for others to view within minutes."

Dowell said the program already has had an effect.

"Last year's HELOC scam is one example," he said. "Due to notification from a CUISPA member, we were able to alert thousands within minutes. We received numerous calls that this alert prevented real losses by allowing credit unions enough time to educate their staff prior to receiving actual fraud attempts."

Meanwhile, the CUISPA (www.cuispa.org) and ACCU (www.corporatenetwork.org) have partnered in an online knowledge exchange among IT risk officers at corporate credit unions.

Registered corporate staffers will be verified prior to access and then can post questions, provide comments and exchange feedback with peers. The free service also includes RSS feeds and e-mail notifications, Dowell said.

"We hope that all corporates take advantage of this excellent knowledge-sharing facility and are able to collaborate on ideas for improving and enhancing information security practices for the benefit of the corporate network," Dowell said.
