MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama State Employees Credit Union's new ClearCheck see-through debit card has won a top honor from the International Card Manufacturers Association.

The Elan Award for Best Secure Financial Card was presented to the card's designer, Harland Clarke, and is printed in partnership with Oberthur Technologies Corp. of America.

The ClearCheck Card is intended to be a cornerstone of the credit union's ClearChecking program and was designed to appeal to the 24-35 age market, although it has proven to have broader appeal, the CU said.

In the first two weeks after the card was introduced, new checking accounts increased by more than 300%, according to Barry Mask, marketing director at the $144 million, 27,000-member CU (www.asecu.org).

The card beat out finalists Citibank and Banco de Popular de Puerto Rico in its category.
