ARLINGTON, Va. — The Federal Trade Commission will be surveying identity theft victims on their experiences working with credit reporting agencies following ID theft incidents.

The FTC will be taking comments until Sept. 2 and said the survey results will guide its future enforcement and education efforts.

Topics in the survey include victims experiences after contacting one or more reporting agencies, whether they received the required notice of rights from the agencies, their access to free credit reports, their ability to place fraud alerts on their files, dispute inaccurate information and block information due to ID theft.

The FTC has estimated that it will need to send 3,000-4,000 surveys to get its desired response of at least 1,000 returned surveys. The research will begin with focus group interviews of 30 consumers, then a pretesting phase of phone interview of 30 more consumers and will end with mail surveys.

The FTC plans to request a Paperwork Reduction Act review from the Office of Management and Budget once comments are in and evaluated.
