COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Security Service Federal Credit Union took some military members from the North American Aerospace Defense Command, also known as NORAD, and United States Northern Command out to the ballpark.
About 500 military staffers enjoyed a Sky Sox game earlier this month courtesy of SSFCU.
Both agencies, housed out of Peterson Air Force Base, are responsible for U.S. and Canadian homeland defense missions as well as defense support of civil authorities. Military members and their families were invited to Security Service Field to enjoy an evening of relaxation away from their headquarters.

"This is a great opportunity for us to give back to our military personnel and their families for all that they do for us and our country," said Bruce Gillooly, assistant vice president of Colorado corporate communications for Security Service. "Spending an evening at Security Service Field is a great opportunity for everyone to sit back, relax and enjoy a great baseball game."
U.S. Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, commander of NORAD, joined his team at the game as the honorary manager for the day. Renuart was also accompanied by his colleague, Lt. Gen. Charlie Bouchard, the NORAD deputy commander.
CUNA Conference Thought Leader, Breakout Sessions Feed Off Each Other
NEW YORK — Attendees of CUNA's America's Credit Union Conference & Expo have the opportunity to attend both thought leader sessions and breakout sessions.
Last year was the first year that CUNA offered both sessions to attendees and Todd Spiczenski, vice president of center for professional development at CUNA, said that the feedback was very positive as people said they loved having both.
Spiczenski described the thought leader sessions as mini-general sessions. Spiczenski said that attendees get to pick one that they want to attend and will experience general session caliber speakers. He said that these sessions have a multimedia aspect and are targeted for 300 to 500 people. The majority of speakers Spiczenski said are authors and business consultants. While the sessions are not as interactive as the breakout sessions the conference bookstore will be selling the authors books and will hold book signings.
The breakout sessions Spiczenski described as more organic and specific to credit unions.
"The breakout sessions are more drill down operational," Spiczenski said.
The two sessions do connect though as Spiczenski said they are designed to build off each other. For example, Monday's breakout session In Debt We Trust: Subprime Lending Crisis, Double Financial Bubble and U.S. Consumer-Led Recession relates to the thought leader session where Bill Hampel, CUNA chief economist and Michael Schenk, vice president of economics and statistics at CUNA, will discuss the outlook of the economy and credit unions.
CU Offers Shred Day to Fight Fraud
WARRENVILLE, Ill. — Corporate America Family Credit Union helped its community fight against identity theft by hosting a shred day that provided the opportunity to shred documents and learn protection strategies.
"We want to help residents protect their families from identity thieves and proper document destruction is a vital step," said Sandy Schneider, Warrenville branch manager.
Warrenville Mayor, David Brummel and police officers from the Warrenville Police Department were present at the event. The event featured a raffle for a personal shredder, snacks and games.
"Identity theft is a serious threat and affects everyone," said Schneider. "We hope this event will give participants the guidance and tools they need to build a strong defense."
CUNA Updates Book on CUs, Economy
MADISON, Wis. — CUNA has released a revised edition of Economics for Credit Union Professionals that explains the overall economy and how credit unions fit in it.
The second edition explains economics while using examples of credit unions wherever possible and has revised figures and tables to reflect current values. There are also new questions in the review section at the end of each chapter. New government regulations for financial institutions were added and the chapter on current economic problems was updated for the slower economic growth.
