WASHINGTON — Two credit union supporters have come closer to taking seats in Congress.
Idaho Lt. Gov. Jim Risch won Tuesday's GOP primary for an open U.S. Senate seat there and Oregon Senator Kurt Schrader won last week's Democratic primary for an open U.S. House seat.
Risch, who has served in his post for eight years, received 65% of the vote in an eight-person primary. He received support and money from the political action committees of CUNA and the Idaho Credit Union League. He will face Democratic candidate Larry LaRocco, a former congressman and lobbyist for the American Bankers Association, in November. The seat is held by Sen. Larry Craig, a Republican who is retiring.

Schrader, who has served in the Oregon Senate for 10 years, won 55% in a five-person primary for the right to be the Democratic standard bearer in the race to succeed retiring Congresswoman Darlene Hooley, a Democrat, of Oregon's 5th District. He was backed by the political action committees of CUNA and the Credit Union Association of Oregon. The Republican nominee is businessman Mike Ericson.
The 5th District is in the north central part of the state, its most populous cities are Corvallis and Salem.
