CU Supporters Lobby Ill. Lawmakers
WASHINGTON — More than 130 employees and board members of credit unions lobbied state lawmakers during the Illinois Credit Union League's annual Legislative Day last month.
Those in attendance at the April 30 event in Springfield urged passage of a bill that expands business opportunities for credit unions, including allowing them to provide check cashing services and issue negotiable checks to people eligible for membership but who have not yet joined. The Illinois House passed the measure that day and it is pending in the Illinois Senate.
Those at the conference also heard from Robert Meza, who recently became the director of the Illinois Division of Financial Institutions.
The group also honored lobbyist Richard Lockhart, whose company, Social Engineering Associates, has represented the interests of Illinois credit unions for 32 years. He was also instrumental in the formation of CUNA's political action committee, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council.
NASA Federal Supporting Troops
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — NASA Federal Credit Union members and staffers alike have teamed up to send a touch of home to troops stationed overseas.
Joining forces with Operation Shoebox NASA Federal collected nearly 500 lbs. of personal care items including toiletries, snacks, reading material and more–all of which provided a much needed morale boost for this group of reservists. Monetary contributions were also made in order to purchase prepaid phone cards. Items were all sent as part of the credit union's care package for a specific outfit, based on correspondence with a member Navy reservist.
"Operation Shoebox provides our servicemen and women with the supplies they need on a daily basis. NASA Federal is honored to support an organization that responds to the needs of our troops who serve and protect our country," said NASA Federal Vice President of Operations James MacPhail.
Founded in 2003, Operation Shoebox is a Florida-based, nonprofit organization created specifically to raise support and funds for vital personal care items for US troops. The effort is one small way to thank the military for serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
