WASHINGTON -- Creating a historical Web site and media campaign are among the ways credit union organizations are planning to mark the 100th anniversary of the movement in the United States.
CUNA, CUNA Mutual Group, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues, and America's Credit Union Museum are forming a "Credit Union Action at 100'' team to develop programs. The team plans a special Web site on the history of credit unions, marketing materials for use by credit unions and credit union leagues and special events tied to meetings such as the 2009 Credit Union Conference and Exposition in Boston, the home of the first credit union league.
NAFCU plans to kick off its celebration when its board of directors meets on June 4 at the America's Credit Museum in Manchester, N.H. to dedicate the NAFCU Room there. The organization also plans to encourage its members to hold anniversary-related activities.
The first credit union, the St. Mary's Bank Credit Union, was formed on Nov. 24, 1908 by Canadian immigrants in Manchester, N.H. Many of the customers worked in the local textile mills and had used credit unions in Canada since the first one was formed there in 1901.America's Credit Union Museum.is housed in the former offices of the St. Mary's Bank Credit Union.
