BURLINGTON, Mass -- Eastern Corporate Federal Credit Union's ALM & Investment Academies reached the 10-year milestone earlier this month, when 50 students completed coursework at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass.

Since first beginning in 1999, the program has expanded to provide three curriculum tracks for introductory, intermediate and advanced pupils. More than 400 credit union professionals and volunteers have attended the program since its inception.

The introductory school offers an orientation to financial management disciplines and investment markets. The intermediate and advanced schools focus on risk management and portfolio development, relying on intensive use of case studies and student interaction as valuable learning tools.

"People attend for a variety of reasons," said Alan Bernstein, EasCorp senior vice president, business development and strategic planning.

"CFOs and others responsible for portfolio and balance-sheet decisions seek to broaden their ALM knowledge and increase their skills, nonfinancial managers frequently attend as part of a professional development program; and credit union board or committee members often want to augment their board training."
