WASHINGTON — CUNA held its 74th annual general meeting at GAC on March 3 that reflected on how far credit unions have come, and how much is yet to come.
Outgoing Chairman Allan McMorris praised the membership growth task force for developing strategies to address the issue of declining growth that has existed since the 1980s. "They've done a terrific job so far," McMorris said.
McMorris also urged credit unions to join together in political action on Capitol Hill. "The movement is best served when we speak with one voice, one voice on Capitol Hill. Not that we don't have our differences but we should discuss that at home and have one voice on Capitol Hill."

When looking at the current economy and its impact on credit unions McMorris, said, "I know we have challenges with the economy but I know working together as a family we can conquer them."
President/CEO Dan Mica took the stage and expressed his enthusiasm on the record number of 4,700 attendees at the conference with 600 first-time attendees. "But its not just about the number of people," Mica said. "It's about people getting together and going to Capitol Hill."
Mica went on to note the state of the credit union movement 10 years ago in comparison to where the movement is at today. "We have come a long way, 10 years ago there was so much to do and there's still so much to do but I couldn't be more proud. The credit union industry has the brightest future it's ever had," Mica said.
Head of the membership growth task force and President/CEO of the Texas Credit Union League Dick Ensweiler gave an overview of the task force's findings and suggestions to generate new membership (See related story, page 27).
Co-founder of the Children's Miracle Network Marie Osmond closed out the meeting by showing her appreciation for the all the credit union industry has done for the network. "I want to re-write the theme of your conference," Osmond said. "From 'Red, White, and You' to 'Red, White, and Thank You.'"
