WASHINGTON — SBA Administrator Steve Preston will tour areas today in the southeastern U.S. damaged by tornadoes, and inspect the agency's disaster recovery operations.

Preston will also meet with residents and federal, state, and local officials to ensure that impacted home and business owners receive timely, effective assistance to rebuild, according to SBA.

The agency's Disaster Assistance program provides disaster loans to homeowners, businesses, and renters; standard SBA loans to small businesses; counseling and entrepreneurial development for small business owners; and assistance to small businesses seeking federal contracting opportunities.

Preston held a press conference this morning in Jackson, Tenn. He also plans to meet with local leaders at Gassville City Hall in Arkansas at 12:15 p.m. CST in addition to touring damaged areas and meeting with business owners here. Later this afternoon, Preston will tour the Camp Robinson Emergency Operations Center.

Thirty-three people were killed in Tennessee as a result of last week's tornadoes, according to state officials. Thirteen people in Arkansas, seven in Kentucky and five in Alabama were also killed. More than 150 people were injured. President Bush declared major disaster areas in parts of Tennessee and Arkansas with more disaster declarations expected.
