OKLAHOMA CITY–Now there could be two showcase conference centers for credit unions here next year with the long-planned Credit Union House set to open late in 2008 and the state regulator putting up a gleaming new building blocks from the state capitol building.

"I think we're the first state in the nation to have our own first-class, self-funded building like this," explained Mick Thompson, the state's top regulator for both banks and CUs.

Like Credit Union House, to be operated by the Oklahoma Credit Union League, Thompson's new $1.9 million State Banking Department Building will be located in the Lincoln Corridor, a showplace area for government buildings.

In addition to serving as a meeting site for examiners and lawmakers, the 8,000 square foot Banking Department Building will have up-to-date audio-visual equipment and a conference center for bank and CU boards to meet, said Thompson who stressed no state appropriation was needed to finance construction.

Meanwhile, the league said an architect is to be selected next week for the $1.3 million Credit Union House, which will be blocks from the Banking Department building and eventually serve as the headquarters for the trade group, which agreed nearly two years ago to relocate from Tulsa to Oklahoma City.
