AMES, Iowa — The credit union community lost Betty Minor, former Iowa Division of Credit Unions superintendent, to lung cancer Aug. 11 at the age of 76.

According to current Superintendent James Forney, Minor was appointed in 1979 by Governor Robert Ray to head up the then newly-established Iowa Department of Credit Unions as a stand alone agency. She retired after nine years of public service in February 1988. “She was instrumental in not only the formation of the new Department but also in establishing and implementing the procedures for examining the credit unions,” he said. “While in office, Betty saw the agency through a period of state government reorganization and the era of financial deregulation. Betty was well liked and highly respected by the Iowa credit union community and her national peers. I and the credit unions in this state are indebted to Betty for the outstanding job she did in placing this agency on such a sound foundation.”
