DENVER — In a move which could sharply shift the dynamics of the U.S. ATM market, some participants in the STAR Network will be able to offer their cardholders surcharge-free ATM access through Allpoint Network's 32,000 ATMs nationwide.
The STAR Network is a subsidiary of First Data and reports 5,400 financial institution participants nationwide.
Access to Allpoint ATMs will be offered to participants in STAR's surcharge-free brand, STARsf, the company said. A spokesman for First Data would not reveal how many institutions currently belong to STARsf, but an industry source estimated it to be in the hundreds.
But the actual number of STARsf participants involved today is somewhat irrelevant since the Allpoint Access will be available to the STARsf participants immediately, simply by virtue of their being participants in STARsf, and could very well lead to an expansion of STARsf participation, explained Glen Turpin, a spokesman for First Data.
“We believe this adds significant value to participating in STARsf and will lead to more institutions being able to enhance their ATM offerings for their customers or members,” Turpin said.
Under the terms of the deal, participating STAR institutions will still have their revenue stream from their own ATMs while offering their cardholders surcharge-free access to Allpoint machines.
