LENEXA, Kan. — The $1.5 billion CommunityAmerica Credit Union has struck upon another way to help guide members to one of the 25,000 fee-free CO-OP ATM Network ATMs that are available to them across the country.

Now members who have them will be able to use global positioning system devices produced by Garmin to find the nearest CO-OP Network ATM.

"As with most financial service providers, credit union members who use an automated teller machine that is not part of our cooperative network can pay from $2 to $5 per transaction," said Guy Russo, chief information officer at CommunityAmerica Credit Union. "Members can now load credit union network ATM location information into Garmin devices and get quick and easy directions to the nearest fee-free ATM.

"Members tell us there's a need for cash on the spur of the moment while driving around town or on vacation. With this service, ATM transactions at a co-op credit union now are just as convenient and economical as at large national banks."

As member-owned organizations, locally focused credit unions do not have national brand identity or signage, but they do band together to provide comparable or better financial services, including a 25,000-site ATM network.

"Now, if members need cash while driving around town or anywhere in the country, they need only consult their Garmin device to get turn-by-turn directions to the nearest credit union ATM, saving time and money," Russo said.

Since many ATMs are located at credit union branches, members also can use the Garmin device directions when needing teller window or drive-through services during normal operating hours. The credit union cooperative network to which CommunityAmerica belongs provides shared branching services at 2,000 locations nationwide.

Beginning Aug. 1, CommunityAmerica members can obtain the data free of charge by visiting any CommunityAmerica branch to load the ATM "points of interest" directly into Garmin devices. They can also visit a branch and obtain the data in a format that can be taken home and loaded into a Garmin device via the member's home computer or visit the CommunityAmerica online banking Web site, for members who use online banking.
