ARLINGTON, Va. -- While NAFCU Director of Planning, Programming, and Special Projects Joe Boyle has many things he is looking forward to enjoying in retirement after 17-plus years with the organization, he said that he will also miss a lot, particularly some of the relationships he has built in the credit union community.
"I've enjoyed my time at NAFCU, which serves the credit union community. That has been a motivation for me to come into work every day and kept me pumped up," he said. But, with a new grandson, Aidan, and an itch to travel the world with his wife, Boyle decided it was time for him to retire for the second time. He previously retired from the Marine Corps in 1989 after 21 years.
His last day at NAFCU will be July 27 after wrapping up NAFCU's big 40th Annual Conference July 17-21 in Honolulu.
For most of his tenure, Boyle has been responsible for board elections, the Defense Credit Union Summit during NAFCU's Annual Conference, and created the organization's disaster recovery plan among many other things. In the last couple of years Boyle oversaw a major, two-year review that "revamped and streamlined" NAFCU Board policies and a similar review of the bylaws in the late 1990s.
Upon retiring, Boyle looks forward to a month in Cape Cod with his family. He also said he wants to catch up on some reading and play with his grandson who lives just a few miles away. After that, it will be on to Australia and New Zealand for nearly two months in with his wife, Diane. Italy and France are two other stops in their future, he said.
An avid runner, Boyle hopes to have more time to devote to the sport as well as becoming a formidable tennis partner for his wife.
He is also currently active in the Marine Executive Association, which helps Marines transition from military service to other jobs. "They helped me tremendously when I came out in 1989," Boyle recalled.
Boyle said NAFCU was a "great opportunity" and everyday something "reinforces that credit unions do a terrific job of serving their members and I've been pleased and honored to be a part." Boyle knows that first hand too having "always" been a member of Navy Federal Credit Union and others since.
