BEL AIR, Md. — Students at Prospect Mill Elementary and William S. James Elementary Schools are getting a lesson in patriotism thanks in part to Freedom Federal Credit Union.

A partnership developed between the PTAs, school administrators, teachers and Freedom FCU helped launch the Patriot Program.

The program's mission is to provide students an opportunity to gain a sense of patriotism and develop an awareness and appreciation of our country's past, present, and future. It is also designed to promote citizenship and pride in our shared American heritage. Students are required to learn the Pledge of Allegiance, the 23 Maryland counties, state capital, identification of national, state, and county officials, as well as identification of seven of the ten national monuments or symbols, among other things.

The program and incentives have proven successful! This is the third year Freedom has sponsored Prospect Mill's program, which has shown improving results each year. Seventy-two members of the fourth grade class at Prospect Mill completed the program, and earned their "Midshipman" designation. A special awards ceremony and pizza luncheon was held at Prospect Mill.

In this first year of the program at William S. James Elementary, 177 students, members of all five grades, received their "Patriot" award. The school held an assembly to honor the students at a very special ceremony, marked by patriotic songs, visiting dignitaries and parents, presentations, readings and an educational audio-visual presentation.

Rose Ann Lambert, CEO of Freedom FCU, and Mike Dilworth, chief of marketing and business development for Freedom participated in both schools' celebrations. All successful students were rewarded with backpacks and t-shirts, featuring the Patriot and the individual school's logo.
