SANTA ANA, Calif. — Orange County Teachers Federal Credit Union hosted a session for credit union executives and supporters to meet and exchange ideas with Rep. Ed Royce (R-Fullerton). The reception, held July 6 at OCTFCU, raised more than $35,000 for Royce, a longtime credit union supporter and original co-sponsor of the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA, H.R. 1537).

"Congressman Royce has been a friend and advocate for credit unions for many years, and we thank him for all he has done for the credit union movement," said Rudy Hanley, president and CEO of OCTFCU. "At a time when it was really difficult to garner support, the Congressman played a major role in the passage of H.R. 1151 (the Credit Union Membership Access Act). We are grateful to him for all of his support, and that's the reason we're here today."

More than 120 executives representing 30 credit unions from throughout California gathered to discuss contributions made by credit unions in their communities and the legislative actions necessary to ensure their viability. Among these actions are passage of CURIA, maintaining credit unions' tax-exempt status and support of new legislation to increase financial data security.

Royce highlighted credit unions as financial models for disadvantaged communities around the world. When asked what credit unions can do to continue to garner support for CURIA, Royce said it is important to have individual conversations with members so that they have a better understanding of the issue. Their letters, e-mails and phone calls do make an impact on Capitol Hill.
