SANTA ANA, Calif. — The $863 million Orange County Credit Union has taken contributions from its staff and turned them into care packages for U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan.

The CU has adopted the United States 2nd Platoon Task Force Saber serving in Afghanistan. Associates donated over $900 at the staff picnic on June 29 and the money was put to good use to purchase care-package essentials in bulk.

“We can't forget those who are fighting for freedom everyday,” remarked John Tierney, facilities manager and project coordinator for Orange County CU. “This year we decided to ask for donations of money that we could use to purchase specific items we knew would make the Troops stay a little bit easier. We used the money to purchase things such as snacks, toiletries, board games, stationery, and many other items.” Packages were sent to the 2nd Platoon on July 3.

In addition to the care-package donation, Orange County's Credit Union is also holding a Troops greeting card drive. Members of the community are invited to stop by any branch and pick up one of two specially designed cards for the Troops and add their creative touches. Cards will be sent through the “A Million Thanks” campaign to a service man or woman either active duty or retired, or delivered to a USO or Veteran's Hospital. The cards should be returned to the Credit Union by August 15, 2007, the CU said.
