WASHINGTON — Credit unions have gained three more supporters in the legislature for the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (H.R. 1537).
On Friday, Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), Kenny Marchant (R-Texas), and Sander Levin (D-Mich.) signed up to co-sponsor the bill. The total number of lawmakers co-sponsoring the bill is 107, including primary sponsor Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.).
CURIA has continued to gain steam over the 110th Congress and lobbyists are hoping for a hearing sometime this session. The bill would provide credit unions expanded business lending powers, permit all federal credit unions to adopt underserved areas, create a risk-based capital system comparable to the banks', and increase voter participation requirements in mutual saving bank conversions.
