BRACKENRIDGE, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania credit union has found itself caught in the middle of a lottery scam.
Allegheny-Ludlum Brackenridge FCU has received more than 20 phone calls, according to the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association's Life is a Highway online newsletter, regarding a lottery scam letter along with an official check that looks like it is from the credit union. The letter is postmarked from Canada.
The cashier's check includes an authentic signature of Allegheny-Ludlum Brackenridge FCU CEO Linda Daum but the routing number and other information from Mid-Atlantic Corporate FCU. A good tip for spotting the forgeries is that the authentic checks include the credit union's phone number while the fakes do not. Most of the checks have been for $3,988, but one was for $3,890.
A warning has been posted to the credit union's Web site and local police, FBI, and the U.S. Postal Service have been alerted.
