WASHINGTON — In its fourth year of life, the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (H.R. 1537) may have the chance for legislative progress in both Houses of Congress.

Better known as CURIA, the bill would expand credit union business lending opportunities, modernize credit unions' capital system, reauthorize federal credit unions of all types to adopt underserved areas, and tighten voting requirements in conversions while eliminating voter incentives and allowing for a member meeting prior to balloting.

Lobbyists have said a full House Financial Services Committee hearing is on its way, hopefully this summer, and a window might just possibly open to push the bill through the House next year. Additionally, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said last fall he would be interested in introducing a CURIA bill in the Senate.
