WILMINGTON, Del. — In an effort to help stop identity theft, DEXSTA Federal Credit Union recently held a free community Shred-a-Thon.
With the use of two shredder trucks from All Star Shredding, DEXSTA helped almost 400 people shred nearly 13,000 lbs. of paper. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America, costing the average victim 175 hours and $1,000 repairing the damage, according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Shredding personal papers and documents is one of the best ways consumers can protect themselves against this costly crime. Nationwide, 2005 was a banner year for identity theft victims with more than $680 million stolen. Since most identity theft comes from mail theft and dumpster diving, shredding personal documents is the best way for consumers to save themselves from becoming victims.
