FAIRFAX, Va. — Apple Federal Credit Union broke ground on its Sterling branch, which will be more convenient for Loudoun County Public School students, parents, faculty and staff.
Apple FCU's growth within the county began early in 2006 when Loudoun County Public Schools welcomed the addition of Apple Student-Run Credit Union branches within the county. So far two high schools have signed on for the progressive concept–Stone Bridge and Heritage High Schools.
Design/build firm TRINITY Group Construction has been tapped for the facility, which is slated for completion this summer.
The credit union has also opened the doors to another Prince William County Student Run Credit Union branch at Osbourn Park High School. The branch marks the sixth for Apple in PWCS, and is one of three that have opened thus far during the 2006-07 school year–Freedom High School and Potomac Middle School opened their doors in early 2006. Osbourn Park is the 34th SRCU in a program that has reached the distinction of second largest in the U.S. In October 2006, Apple's hands-on approach to financial education received special honors at the state level with the CUNA-sponsored Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award. Apple's leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of youth financial literacy was chosen as best in category for Virginia credit unions with more than $200 million in assets. Apple's program garnered similar accolades from the Virginia Credit Union League, winning the organization's Visionary Award for overall achievement and outstanding contributions to the credit union movement.
Apple's Student-Run Branch Program provides real world financial literacy, fiscal education and the opportunity to explore future employment options to students served by 34 high school, secondary school and middle school locations within six school districts across Northern Virginia. The credit union's model has been so successful since its launch in 1995, a version has been adopted by the Future Business Leaders of America.
