WASHINGTON — The President's Identity Theft Task Force is seeking public comment on particulars for its strategic plan to fight identity theft before submitting its final recommendations to the president.
The task force, which has NCUA representation, has been charged with presenting a final strategic plan to combat identity theft to the president by Feb. 9, 2007 or as soon as practicable.
Task force members have focused on keeping sensitive consumer data out of the hands of identity thieves through better data security practices and by educating consumers to protect themselves; making it more difficult for identity thieves, when they are able to obtain consumer data, to use the information to steal identities; assisting the victim recovery; and deterring identity theft by aggressively prosecuting and punishing those who commit the crime.
