LUTHERVILLE, Md. — First Financial of Maryland Federal Credit Union has cut the official ribbon on its first student branch at Dundalk High School. The Owl branch, named for the high school mascot, is designed to give high school students real world experience of working at a credit union while learning important financial literacy lessons. Open for business every other day, during lunch hours the branch is run by five seniors and a faculty advisor. Services range from account opening and deposits, to limited cash withdrawals. Final processing of transactions takes place at a nearby full-service First Financial FCU branch. “This is a great opportunity to work with high school students and the school system to teach the importance of basic personal finance skills,” said First Financial FCU President/CEO Rob Windsor. This initiative is one of many youth programs First Financial FCU has in place to address the growing need for financial literacy among high school students. The credit union also works in conjunction with high schools to teach financial education classes topics like credit management, maintaining a checking account, understanding credit and debit cards and choosing a financial institution.
