ARVADA, Colo. — Credit unions in Colorado and worldwide, celebrated International Credit Union Day on October 19 with festivities for members.
For 58 years, credit unions have set aside the third Thursday in October to celebrate ICU Day as a way to promote understanding and support for the credit union difference and reflect on the history of credit unions.
Credit unions all around Colorado celebrated ICU Day with festivities such as: serving complimentary refreshments in their lobby; free hotdog lunches; giveaways; essay writing contests for youth; special one-week promotional offerings; and hosting special events.

Boulder Valley Credit Union invited U.S. Congressman Mark Udall and Boulder's Mayor Mark Ruzzin to celebrate being the first Colorado credit union to offer an Employer Assisted Housing benefit program to its employees. In addition, the credit union plans to assist its affiliated employer groups and other companies so that they can offer this exciting benefit to their employees as well. "When more employees can purchase homes within our community, the employee wins, the employer wins, and our community wins," said Congressman Udall. St. Vrain Valley CU hosted a 2nd Annual Legislator's Forum and Reception to ring in ICU Day. Members were able to mingle with Colorado State Senator Brandon Shaffer, State Representative Jack Pommer and representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator Ken Salazar, U.S. Senator Wayne Allard and U.S.Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave. "International Credit Union Day reminds us of our proud history and of our commitment to continue to make a difference in the lives of our members and in our communities," said Eva Gaudio, president of St. Vrain Valley CU.
Demonstrating community support, the Pueblo Chapter of Credit Unions sponsored "Apache", a miniature horse used in the programs at Therapeutic Riding & Education Center. The Pueblo Chapter of CUs and all participating credit unions presented a donation of $2,078 to Virginia Steckman, executive director of T.R.E.C. on ICU Day at Apache's first public appearance.
"The Pueblo Chapter of CUs is proud to assist T.R.E.C. in reaching their mission of enhancing and improving the lives of children, youth, adults and seniors with special needs and/or disabilities through the use of Equine facilitated activities," said Ronda Baca of Pueblo Government Agencies FCU.
