WASHINGTON — Ever wonder why no one has heard from the Campus Credit Union Council in some time?

The group, housed in CUNA's Washington, D.C. headquarters, quietly closed up shop in May of 2005. A CUNA spokesperson said the organization "disbanded because it didn't have the support to sustain itself."

CCUC targeted credit unions run by college students. Obviously, the transient nature and turnover inherent in such credit unions affected membership, according to CUNA. Additionally, the number of credit unions run by students dwindled as fields of membership became larger with many college campuses already served by other credit unions or banks.

The spokesperson said he could not uncover when CCUC was initiated, but it was likely sometime in the early 1990s.
