FLINT, Mich. — A few months after receiving a kidney transplant, Leroy Nesbit, president of the Combined Council of General Motors Credit Unions, said he's in good spirits.

"I am recovering very nicely from my kidney transplant surgery," Nesbit said. "My strength is getting better everyday."

Nesbit, who has also served on Dort Federal Credit Union's board for more than 30 years, said he's had the new kidney for 79 days and "it's working well." The credit union veteran gives high praise to the Cleveland Clinic, which is helping him recover. The twice-a-week lab reports have been "excellent." He said he is now concentrating on keeping his blood sugar under control and "so far, my efforts are looking good."

"My 90 days of hibernation from crowds and germs will be up in November," Nesbit said. "I can then slowly resume contact with my church, credit union board, and the community we live in."

In August, the African-American Credit Union Coalition honored Nesbit with its Pete Crear Lifetime Achievement award at its annual conference in Seattle.
