HARRISBURG, Pa. — Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), who finds himself in a very tight race this year, held a conference call on Columbus Day with Pennsylvania credit union officials.

The Senate Banking Committee member and Republican Conference Chair discussed health care, individual development accounts and North Korea during the call, according to Pennsylvania Credit Union Association Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing Mike Wishnow. A couple dozen credit union executives from across the state participated in the call.

On credit unions, PCUA's Life is a Highway quoted Santorum as stating, "Credit unions are incredibly effective at communicating their position. All groups can learn a lesson in communication and grassroots advocacy from the credit union movement."

Santorum, a two-term Senator, typically runs tight elections and this year's against Bob Casey Jr. is no exception. Casey is a moderate Democrat currently serving as state treasurer and has good name recognition as the son of former Pennsylvania Governor Bob Casey.

"It's an interesting race," Wishnow commented. "Frankly, I think there are credit union folks supporting both candidates." He added that both have good relations with credit unions.

Other Republicans in Pennsylvania are also facing tough opposition, Wishnow noted, including House Financial Services Committee Members Jim Gerlach and Mike Fitzpatrick and Appropriations Committee Member Don Sherwood.
