WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture is appointing a member of the board of the $332 million Lafayette Federal Credit Union to administer an area of the department that is meant to serve the nation's agricultural cooperatives.

A USDA spokesman was unable to confirm USDA's pending announcement that LeAnn Oliver, currently an employee of the Small Business Administration as well as the secretary of Lafayette's board, was being named Deputy Administrator of Cooperative Programs. However a spokesman for the SBA confirmed the pending appointment.

The Cooperative Services Program is designed "to promote understanding and use of the cooperative form of business as a viable organizational option for marketing and distributing agricultural products," according to the USDA Web site.
