EL PASO, Texas — It's no secret that many immigrants to the U.S. from Mexico and other Latin American countries need assistance acquiring financial management skills. Now the El Paso Affordable Housing CUSO is working together with the Mexican Consulate in El Paso to provide financial education programs.
The programs are being taught both in Spanish and English. In addition, El Paso Affordable Housing is offering free weekly financial classes.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, more than half of all Mexican immigrants lack accounts at credit unions and banks.

West Texas Credit Union, El Paso, was one of the participating financials at the seminars. The CU offers low-cost wire transfers to Mexico and 18% payday loans. It also accepts the matricula consular card.
Marketing Director Luis Cabalero said the CU believes that educating people about finances is the key to getting them on the road to creating wealth.
