Altura Credit Union, Riverside, Calif., recently awarded $16,450 in college scholarships to 17 Riverside County high school graduates. This is an increase of $4,700 over last year’s scholarship awards. The scholarship program was open to all Riverside County high school seniors who planned on enrolling in an accredited post-secondary institution in 2006. It is the 14th year that the Altura Foundation awarded scholarships. The program is funded by Altura members–$2 from the one-time $12 membership fee goes to the scholarship fund. The foundation awarded 14 general scholarships of $1,000 and three memorial scholarships totaling $2,450 this year. Steel Works Community Federal Credit Union, Weirton, W.Va., has donated $300 to Cincinnati Bengals running back Quincy Wilson for his football speed camp. Wilson, former Weir High star, holds the camp at Harding Stadium in Steubenville during the month of June. Pacific Service Credit Union, Walnut Creek, Calif., donated 30 personal computers to five organizations focused on assisting low income, at-risk children. The computers were donated to Fresno Police Activities League, Shih-You Lang Central YMCA (San Francisco), Youth Credit Union Program (San Francisco), Vacaville Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club and Community Action Partnership of Sonoma. All the organizations have youth mentorship, tutoring or computer literacy programs. Partners Federal Credit Union, Anaheim, Calif., recently awarded three $2,000 scholarships in the annual Partners Jr. Executive Club scholarship awards. The recipients were Jarod DuVall, Janelle Neynaber and Scott Nguyen. Partners has awarded scholarships since 1994 and has given away over $40,000 since the program began. Applicants were selected based on academic achievement, community involvement, as well as an essay response. Wauna Federal Credit Union, Clatskanie, Ore., recently donated $1,000 to the Columbia Enforcement Narcotics Team. CENT is a multi-jurisdictional narcotic task force, which was established in the late 1980s to conduct investigations of mid- and upper-level narcotics traffickers whose illegal enterprises have substantial effect on the citizens of Columbia County. MiddConn Municipal Federal Credit Union, Middletown, Conn., recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Michael Bertrand Jr. to help with his college expenses. The CU awards a $1,500 scholarship annually to a graduating senior who is a credit union member. Security Service Federal Credit Union, San Antonio, made a $10,000 contribution to help underwrite the San Antonio Public Library’s summer reading program. In addition to the financial donation that the CU made in honor of its 50th anniversary, Security Service FCU presented copies of a book detailing the credit union’s history to the library for its branch locations and main library collection. LBS Financial Credit Union, Long Beach, Calif., has awarded scholarships to 30 students in Long Beach and surrounding communities. Each year LBSFCU encourages local area high schools, adult schools and community colleges to participate in their scholarship program by recommending students for an award. This year 26 high schools, two college and two adult school students were awarded scholarships.
