MASSILLON, Ohio — Superior Savings Credit Union made it much more difficult for sensitive information to fall into the wrong hands with its recent Shred It Day.
The credit union issued an open invitation to the entire Massillon community to destroy old financial records, learn how to protect themselves from identity theft, and donate to a worthy cause.
The free event drew a crowd who watched as a Shred It truck turned receipts, statements, and other personal paperwork into fine confetti. Impossible to reconstruct, the 4,500 pounds of confetti was then discarded without fear of criminals pulling it out of the trash–or "dumpster diving."

"Proper disposal of documents containing account numbers, passwords, social security numbers, and other personal information is an essential part of protecting yourself from identity thieves," said Superior Savings CU CEO Debbie Hartke.
In addition to disposing of financial refuse, the credit union collected $300 for the Salvation Army's Back-to-School Program.
"I had no doubt that our credit union members and the Massillon community would show their generosity. Shred-It Day was a smashing success, benefiting everyone involved," said Hartke.
