WASHINGTON — CUNA nominated Central Star Credit Union President and CEO A. Lee Williams to serve on the Federal Reserve Board's Consumer Advisory Council.

Williams has served the credit union in a variety of capacities for the last 18 years and took the top spot in 1997. During her time in credit unions, she has also been on the chartering committee establishing Kansas' first community development credit union. Williams has chaired CUNA's state issues subcommittee and served as a member of its Government Affairs Committee.

The credit union executive testified before Congress in 2001 about credit union alternatives to payday lending as chairman of CUNA's Payday Lending Task Force. She has also co-authored a comprehensive booklet–now in its third printing–highlighting alternatives to payday loans. Williams also recently testified in support of dual chartering of credit unions and the continuation of the tax-exemption for all credit unions before the National Conference of State Legislators' annual meeting. She is a research committee member for the Filene Research Institute and a member of the African-American Credit Union Coalition.
