ARLINGTON, Va. and NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Criminals have gone phishing with the NAFCU and the Illinois Credit Union League names.
An e-mail from [email protected] read: "For your protection, we have limited your access, until additional security measures can be completed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please restore your access as soon as possible." The e-mail included a link to a false Web site.
Little can be done about phishing as it is very difficult to trace. "There are a few things we can do," NAFCU Senior Vice President of Communications Jay Morris commented. "We can encourage the recipients of these e-mails to report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, which is joint project of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center. We can also educate people to the fact that these truly are scams and they should never give their personal financial information to an unknown third party."

The Illinois league has been alerted to a fraudulent e-mail circulated over the weekend with a subject line of "Important Information from Customer Support Center" and included a link that attempted to persuade recipients to fill out an Illinois Credit League Survey for $25.
Financial institutions and related organizations, including CUNA, NCUA, Credit Union Times, and several credit unions, have been prime targets for these criminals looking for personal information to fraudulently access accounts.
