FREDERICK, Md. – Over limit fees are still rising among major card issuers, but at a significantly slower pace than previously, according to Cardweb.com, a Web site which tracks card industry trends. Even though the average over limit fee crossed the $31 milestone in 2005, the site reported that this increase was only 2.9% over where it had been in 2004. By comparison, the average went up 3.8% in 2004 and over 32% in 1997. While over limit card fees increased almost 100% between 1994 and 1999, the growth slowed markedly after 2000, shifting down to 17% growth between 2000 and 2005, the trend tracker said. Credit unions, by and large, have not participated in the run up in similar fees.
