NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – According to the Michigan Credit Union League credit unions here have collectively donated nearly $600,000 to benefit the victims of 2005′s devastating hurricanes. The total includes credit union donations to relief organizations that total some $425,000, as well as more than $161,000 in contributions to the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) Hurricane Relief Fund, created in cooperation with the MCUL. In addition, credit union chapters across Michigan donated more than $15,000 to the relief effort. Some of the state's top fund-raisers include Lansing-based State Employees Credit Union contributing more than $120,000 to American Red Cross and the NCUF; and Farmington-based LOC Federal Credit Union raising more than $50,000 for the American Red Cross. From the Fund, the MCUF has committed and/or disbursed $76,021 to the American Red Cross for humanitarian relief; and $85,974 to the National Credit Union Foundation for credit union rebuilding. In addition to fundraisers, Kellogg Community FCU, Battle Creek, lent its mobile credit union branch and ATM to Gulf Coast Community Federal Credit Union (GCCFCU) in Gulfport, Mississippi. GCCFCU, a $48 million asset credit union serving more than 10,000 members, was severely affected by the disaster when two of its three branches were completely destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.
