PHOENIX – Eager to increase political fund raising for state races, the Arizona Credit Union League has revised its 15-year old “Capitol Club” program permitting higher levels of personal contributions above $1,000. In just a week, it has raised more than $5,000 in personal contributions from CU executives across the state. “Remember this is John McCain’s state and we have strict limits on campaign contributions,” said Daniel Herron, political action coordinator for the league. State law, explained Herron, sets limits on PAC and individual contributions at $296, “and those who participate in the state’s `Clean Election’ program cannot receive any PAC contributions, and individual contributions are limited to only $5.00.” Because of those limits, said the league “it is important to reach out to credit union advocates across the state” at local fund-raisers of which there have been many this month prior to the startup of the Arizona legislature on Jan. 9.
