LAS VEGAS – Florida Credit Union Board Director Dr. John C. Rawls has been named the 2005 CUES Directors Educational Forum Director of the Year during the CUES 2005 Directors Conference here. “It is with great pleasure that I stand here before you tonight and even a greater pleasure to receive such an award. It is always good to be recognized, especially when you do voluntary work. We have a terrific responsibility, as a result of the tornadoes, the hurricanes and the downsizing of businesses, to ensure members don’t lose faith in credit unions. We must learn to take risks to help these people because as you know, the credit union philosophy is `people helping people.’ We are innovative directors and CEOs, so let’s cooperate and see what we can do to help out so that all of us will be able to enjoy a better life,” said Rawls in accepting his award. Rawls has been a Florida CU board member for over 48 years and has served as board president, vice president, secretary, chairman and treasurer. For the past 37 years, he has devoted his career to education as a teacher, supervisor and administrator. He also shares his love for music by volunteering as a musician for local churches and elementary schools. The DEF Director of the Year award recognizes board members who raise the bar of excellence in credit union volunteerism. Judging is based on leadership positions held at the credit union, contributions to other credit unions and credit union organizations, professional development, community service, and credit union performance during the time the nominee has been on the board. In recognition of the award, CUES will donate $250 to a charitable organization on Rawls’ behalf.
